This is not news to all, but may be to some. Confirming that all the 2.7-mile section of the 6.5-mile length of Doublehead Gap Rd north of its intersection with Newport Rd that was previously hardpacked gravel has an asphalt surface. It’s not a great surface and there does not seem to have been any other improvements. So, it’s still narrow, but it suffices. As a more direct route to/from Hwy 60/Morganton Hwy it is not going to be quicker that the great 7.8-mile Newport Rd/Dial Rd combination to which we’ve been accustomed. It also by-passes Van Zandt's Grill & Grocery on Newport Rd which is often a welcome stop on a ride, but it does provide another asphalt option in the area.
