Introduction & The Curriculum

This course is for experienced motorcyclists who have experience on an ADV (adventure) dual-sport motorcycle in a paved environment. For the purposes of this course, an experienced rider is one who has basic skills, is a current rider, and possesses a current motorcycle license or endorsement with insurance. Riders will need to use their own street-legal ADV bike in the course. Low traction off-pavement riding requires a uniquely different approach to riding over higher traction, paved environments. The overall aim is to provide an enjoyable learning experience while transferring the fundamental knowledge and skills for riding ADV motorcycles on unpaved surfaces.

Motorcycles

This course is for two-wheel, adventure type motorcycles (referred to as adventure bikes or ADVs) which riders will bring to the event. ADVs are street-legal motorcycles designed for long-distance highway riding that include features for off-pavement riding. Motorcycles must have sufficient off-pavement capabilities for the course. Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) street-legal dual-sort motorcycles are allowed in the course. At a minimum, the ADV must have tires appropriate for off-pavement surfaces and adequate suspension to cross over a 6”X6” obstacle. Most standard, dual-sport motorcycles are appropriate. Conversion or modified motorcycles are not suitable. Motorcycles with tires designed solely for on-pavement operation are not suitable.

Pre-requisites:

·      Participants must be at least 16 years old and possess a current motorcycle permit/license and proof of insurance.

·      Participants must bring a motorcycle that meets the requirements above (see Motorcycles). A personal motorcycle is preferred, but a borrowed ADV is permissible with written proof of permission by the owner and insurance coverage.

·      All ADV motorcycles must have ADV-centric tires, preferably at least 50/50. (Although, bikes with tires that are 100% for street riding can get by at this site.)

·      No experience riding off-pavement is required. (The course is for licensed riders who own an adventure bike (ADV) and have experience with it on the street.)

·      Riders should be familiar with the owner's manual and bring it with them.

·      Riders are suggested to bring extra brake and clutch levers in case of breakage. Heavy duty, hand grip brush guards are highly encouraged.

·      Riders must be familiar with the controls and adjustments that are possible on their ADV motorcycle.

·      Riders should know how to turn on & off ABS and know how select different ride modes where applicable.

·      Riders should bring a desire to learn and expect to have a blast!

Duration: This is a one day course with all of Day 1 on range work and new skills development.

Cancellation Due to Inclement Weather/Conditions

It is our goal to minimize opportunities for class cancellation as many riders make advanced arrangements for time off, travel, bike prep and so forth to attend training. Further, we welcome training in reasonable “natural” conditions where the weather may be transiently inclement to help our riders prepare for “real-life” conditions. However, there can be an occasional time when the anticipated weather over the duration of the training event is non-stop rain. In those circumstances, we have found training to be significantly less productive and simply not as much fun. In this case, it is inconvenient for all. We will provide notice of cancellation typically 3 days in advance of the event.
