Ironhorse weekend 2022 Saturday ride details
Ian Feinberg

The Ironhorse Weekend took place over October 13-15. It was well attended and the Ironhorse Lodge was the perfect setting for the fall colors. Saturday’s ride covered 188 miles and went from Ironhorse to Robbinsville, Wayah Rd, Franklin, Walnut Creek rd to Cashiers, and then looping back via hwy 281, 107, 23 and 28 back to Ironhorse. We set out from Ironhorse bundled up for the nippy temps. We took hwy 28 to 143 to Robbinsville for a short stop where the weather warmed a bit and we began to shed a layer or two. From there we headed east on hwy 129 to hwy 74 briefly to connect with Wayah Rd. Wayah Rd was the perfect setting for a fall ride. It starts by following a cascading stream with fly fishermen dotting the trail with waterfalls rounding out the section. The road then winds around Nantahala Lake with mountain peak views on the horizon. Beyond the lake Wayah twists and turns on an undulating roller coaster ride surrounded by fall forest complete with falling red and yellow leaves. Wayah dumps out on hwy 64, which we took west, passing Franklin. We turned onto Walnut Creek Rd providing even sharper curves. Instead of taking pine Creek Road around Lake Glenville we went right onto N. Norton Rd into Cashiers. Lunch was at Whiteside Brewery. We had to wait in line to order from the limited menu but once that happened service was fast. We continued the ride east on hwy 64 then north on hwy 281, which provided endless curves until it connected back with hwy 107. From there we shot south on hwy 23 to pick up the curvy section of hwy 28 from Franklin to Ironhorse.
