Ride

Two Wheels of Suches - June - Tellico Plains
Author Last Post
No worries, you did great! I am so happy to almost have your first roll off on film.
Now that you have your pretty bike dirty, come on out again.
Mark, your time and energy to create the navigation and be "the guy we followed" is greatly appreciated. It was my first time riding those roads and I had a blast. I watched the snake rush out of harms way and into the grass by the time you passed it and as I approached it. The snake and all riders unharmed. Riding home Sunday morning, Peter and I were nearly ambushed by a rather large doe as we ran the twisties on Hwy-60 from TWO to Blue Ridge. The doe quickly stopped by the roadside as I approached her and she had the sense to turn around and bound back up the ridge line by the time Peter approached. her.  Again, all good.  As Mark mentioned, great weather, good roads, excellent lunch and great riding partners.
Thanks to all the riders on the GS dirt trip.  I learned a lot and had a blast.  Thank all of you for being patient with this "Newbie Adventure rider".  One key lesson I learned is that I don't bounce like I used to.  Scott thanks so much for leading this ride, it was fun.
Quick ride report.

Joe B, Peter B, Rudy B and I rode to Tellico Plains and back as planned.  First stop was gas in Tellico Plains, then on to Tellico Kats for lunch.  After lunch we took a pause at a viewpoint overlooking Lake Ocoee on US64 to stretch legs, then a last stop for refreshments at Van Zant’s on the final leg to TWoS.  Weather was warm dry and sunny.  No unusual road conditions, and light traffic made the trip a breeze.  Small group and good weather meant we took the option to ride Candy Mountain which gave us all a slow-twisties workout.  Missed a 3- or 4ft snake slithering across the road at one point. I think Peter collected a squirrel with uncertain outcome for the beast as well.… Lunch at Tellico Kats had one surprise.  New owners.  The “ladies” having retired.  Some changes around the store, but same sandwich menu options.  Will be interesting to see how they build on the reputation they inherited from the “ladies.”  Riding down TN315 we did note that Flip-Flop Burgers on the north side where the road crosses the Hiawassee River was open and made a note to make it a stop on a future ride.  Lots of tubing and rafting going on as various points on the ride, including a good crowd at Van Zant’s.  Good ride.  Great company.  Would do all again in a heartbeat.

186 miles.  4½ hours ride time.

I'll keep it to mostly to Forrest service roads so you will do fine.
I’ve added some nuances to my road ride plan. If overall ride progress allows, we may add one or two 10-minute leg stretch stops. If we do, the first would be at “Hot Spot” at the US19/US64 intersection southwest of Murphy on the way out. The second would be at a Lake Ocoee viewpoint on the way back. Also, if the group is not too large and the weather’s good, on the way to Tellico Plains we may ride the Candy Mountain route option that parallels NC294 to the south for about 8-miles as both routes track north west from Hot Spot to the NC/TN state line - It’s a favorite slow-ish twisty alternative that’s best ridden with a small group in good weather.  So, no fundamental changes to the plan. See those who want to play at TWoS Saturday. Be ready to roll at 9:30AM.

Hey Scott,
I would like to join you on your ride.  I'm riding up Saturday morning and will be at TWO ready to go at 9 AM.  I'm new to off roading (just got an R 1250 GS) so I can hang for the easy stuff, but will need to bail if you are doing some serious trail riding.

Hi Mark, I will be camping this weekend with the club and would like to join the ride Saturday. Looking forward to it.

Thanks,

Hi, Mark.

I would like to join you for a ride.  I will be camping (in a cabin) at the event, so I will see you there.
I'd like to join, but probably won't know until last minute due to a work related issue.  I'll reach out to you if I can make it.

Jose

Unfortunately have to miss this event.  Teaching weekend for me.

Thank you for planning and leading this ride. I will plan an off-road run for those look for dirty bikes.

Ride safe!
Confirming that this planned for Saturday, June 29th.
Not sure what the club has organized by way of rides over the TWoS weekend later this month, but on Saturday I plan to ride to/from Tellico Plains if the weather is halfway decent.  My route is about 185 miles and between 4½ and 5 hours ride time.  Stops planned at Tellico Kats (gas stop just before for those that need it), Tellico Plains for lunch, gas at Conoco, Windy Ridge, snack at Van Zandt's, Dial.  I expect to leave TWoS at 9:30AM and return around 4:30PM.  Happy to have company.  If weather is poor, I’ll short-cut by heading south, rather than north, at the TN123 intersection with TN68 around the Turtletown area, making Copperhill/McCaysville the lunch stop and the whole trip 125 miles and 3 to 3½ hours or so ride time.  Happy to have company.
