Ride Report

Leisurely 145-mile jaunt on a loop just extending into North Carolina and Tennessee from Two Wheels of Suches on a day perfectly made for riding.  12 club members took advantage of the ride, with some camping at TWoS and more making it a day trip from the Atlanta and surrounding area.

Started from TWoS just about on time at 10:30AM heading north on GA60.  I was leading and missed the planned turn onto Skeenah Gap as I was fiddling with the controls on my ‘bike.  A not-so-quick reversal of route ensued which tested our ‘bikes steering locks – not with complete success.  Back on track we headed north on familiar open sweeping roads passing to the west and north of Nottely Lake to US129/US64 to pick up Hwy294 towards Turtletown.  A 5-mile alternative to part of Hwy294 over Candy Mountain gave us a few slow twisties (all be it on a road surface well past its prime) to enjoy on our way to picking up Hwy68 south into Copperhill/McCaysville for lunch.  Timing proved to be perfect with the Blue Ridge Mountain Railroad day trippers just finishing eating to make room for us!  After lunch one of group headed home (a few miles away) while the rest of us headed south on Hwy5.  About 2-miles before Blue Ridge we took Scenic Drive/Sugar Creek Rd to head southwest paralleling US76 to Ellijay – this was traffic free and its long sweeping curves allowed us to open up a little.  Gas in Ellijay.  Then a few headed home towards Atlanta’s northwest suburbs while the rest of us rode Hwy52 and Big Creek Rd/Doublehead Gap Rd/Newport Rd – all nicely sweeping roads – to Van Zandt's Riverwalk Grill & Grocery/Country Store.  Some on a tight timeframe carried on while others paused for refreshments and to share reflections on the day’s ride.  Consensus was that it could only have been better if the temperature had been a few degrees cooler – tough day!  Just left a 13-mile run back to TWoS with some ending the day there and others making their way home.  Great relaxed fun in great company.

Weather forecast for this weekend in looking good for this Saturday’s ride from/to TWoS.

I’ve made a minor tweak to the preliminary route shared earlier.  The plan now incorporates riding over Candy Mountain on NC1150.  This adds a few slow twisties as an alternative to simply blasting along an additional five miles of NC294 just before Turtletown.

See the calendar listing here for updated map and GPX files: Calendar - Group Ride from Two Wheels of Suches

Please register via the calendar page if you intend to make the ride.  It’s not a hard and fast requirement, but it does help with planning.

See you Saturday.
