Club hosts annual Christmas Dinner and Toy Run

On Friday, Dec 15th, 35 members and guests gathered at Buca Di Beppo for the BMW Motorcycle Club of Georgia's  annual Christmas Dinner. If you haven't been to a Buca Di Beppo, it's an Italian chain restaurant with a very eclectic interior design scheme that includes an amusing assortment of tacky art, photos of 1960's Italian restaurants and classic actors and actresses from Italian films.  Guests are walked through the active kitchen en route to the their seats. It's weird but fun.

The meal was served family style, with waitstaff bringing out bowls of spaghetti, plates of manicotti and chicken parmigiana until the guests were stuffed. Then the meal was topped off with cannoli for a nice dessert treat.  Between dinner and dessert the club held a raffle of numerous prizes from our local BMW Motorcycle dealers, BMW Motorcycles of Atlanta and Hourglass Cycles.

Prizes included $50 gift certificates, Givi Dry bags, BMW Christmas ornaments and some apparel items.  Feedback from attendees present was very favorable regarding the food, service and enjoyable conversation that one always expects from a club event.  Thanks again to Bob & Linda Wooldridge of BMW Ducati of Atlanta and Kyle Campbell of Hourglass for attending the event and supporting the club raffle.

On Saturday, Dec 16th, I rolled my GS Adventure out of the garage at 7:30 AM and as I cranked the bike up the LCD display chimed that the outdoor temperature was 31 degrees F and a large snowflake symbol appeared on the information display.  I pressed the info button again to cycle the display to read the range of fuel left but instead of giving me the range,  the display read "Seriously, it's 31 degrees outside -this is stupid!'. One more press of the info button and the display now read "Dumbkoff"', which I'm pretty sure is German for "Oil Level OK" , so I rode off to Bob & Linda's for the ride up to Towns County.

Arriving at the BMW Ducati of Atlanta dealership, it was nice to see three large boxes loaded with toys for the kids. The toy boxes continued to be filled as additional members showed up with unwrapped presents that they had loaded in their side cases.  After partaking of some of the excellent food provided by the dealership (ChikFilA biscuits, bear claws, cookies and donuts) we all had enough calories to sustain our selves for the ride up to the Conoco stop in Blue Ridge. The 20-plus riders who had braved the frosty morning temperatures assembled for a brief ride safety overview and then I led the group up 75N to 575 and around the parkway to the Conoco station that has been our traditional stopover point for the toy run. A quick bio-break, a cup of superb gas station coffee and a top up of gas and we were on our way. The sky was clear and the sun was warming things up, but there was still a lot of snow on the sides of the hills in the mountains and so it was definitely a wintery scene.

We pulled into the detention center and met up with the group that had departed from Hourglass Cycles in Buford at around the same time.  Kyle Campbell hosted a group of riders who departed from Buford and took an alternate route to Towns County. After unloading both trucks,  all of the members present posed for a group photo.  The Towns County Sheriff thanked all of the club members for their generous support of the kids in Town County. He commented that our club is the major source of the presents for the kids, most of whom would not get any presents without us. After the group photo, riders headed off for home or lunch at a nearby restaurant.

On behalf of the club I'd like to thank all of the members who donated gifts, and an additional thank you to  those who saddled up on a frosty morning to deliver toys to needy kids. Its really speaks to the quality of people we have as members. Well done!
